Loving your parents - Mom’s Celebration for Now

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Me again…little miss socialite.  I’m sick as a dog so please, be nice.  I”m wondering what you guys know about Social Media.  I know I mentioned it here one time before but not many people seem to have much to say about it.  So, I’m asking again, what does Social Media mean to you?

Since you have to wait and reply in the comments or via email, I’ll tell you that Social Media is the biggest blooming thing happening on the planet right now.  It’s big ya’ll.  I know that unless you are internet habitual offender (and you probably wouldn’t’ be on this site if you weren’t) then you probably don’t have a clue or care but, let me talk about it please, for one minute…remember, I don’t feel well.

Mothers Day 2009

For me, the word social has always made me smile.  I like people.  I like to meet new people, I like to chat with people and listen to their story (because you know, we all have a story) and I like to share my story.

Well, to wind this into something important here, Mother’s Day is just around the corner and you have a mother, a mother-in-law, a sister or a friend who would love some attention on Mother’s Day, right?  So, if you go to 5 Minutes for Mom, you can enter to win a bouquet of flowers from Teleflora.  Yea, for real.  Go now and give it a whirl!

There’s more….

Teleflora is also running a Mom’s Shopping Spree Sweepstakes, which kicked off on April 20th. The grand prize is a $20,000 shopping spree; first and second prizes will be shopping gift cards. When you are done entering our giveaway, be sure to head on over to Teleflora for your chance to win an AMAZING shopping spree for you and your mom!.

Eating, Nom Nom Nom Yummy

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

You know, I’m sure you are all sitting around wondering what in the heck I think I’m doing talking to you about cooking.  But, what I’m thinking is this….maybe I should learn how to cook sooner than later.

No, really, we eat out of boxes for the most part and neither of us really have a clue when it comes to cooking how to put together a balanced meal.  I don’t want kids to grow up with these horrible eating habits and thus far, we haven’t given them a very good start.

So, if you want to learn a little about A Flash in the Pan you can go read the Press Release.  Just don’t forget to come back so you can qualify for the contests.

Ok, are you back?

Now, let me tell you a little bit about A Flash in the Pan ok?

Max and Nancy are two chefs from Napa Valley and founders of aflashinthepan.com.  They both graduated from the Culinary Institute of America and have over 35 years of professional culinary experience between them.

I have a year membership to the site, A Flash in the Pan for one of my lucky readers.

And, there’s more, just keep reading…at the bottom *hint hint*

So, here’s how this works ok.

1.  Comment here on my blog before April 21 at noon Eastern Time.

2.  On April 21st I will do a random draw and one person from this site will win a free one year membership to A Flash in the Pan

3.  Also on April 21st I will take all the comments regarding A Flash in the Pan from this site, Mom~E~Centric and from Mom is Teaching and I will use Random.org to choose one semi-finalist

4.  I will send the name of the person that I get from number 3 to the coordinator of a the #FIPan twitter party which will take place on April 22.

5.  The pre-party for #FIPan twitter party starts at 7 PM Eastern time and will go until we are all twittered out.  (Some of you may now the last hashtag party I hosted lasted 5.5 hours).

6.  Then, at the #FIPan party, another 25 winners will be given a year’s membership to A Flash in the Pan.

7.  And, then finally, the Grand Prize Winner will be chosen from the semi-finalist submitted by all 25 bloggers who participated.

One lucky winner will win both of them for one evening and an incredible 6-course dinner for 6 people.  Both chefs will come to the winner’s house, prepare the feast AND clean up after!  So, decide who your five best friends are and enter to win!

8. You can enter once on all 3 of my sites if you want but you can only win once.  I will choose the semi-finalist from all the entries on all 3 blogs, then I will choose one winner on each blog from the remaining entries to receive the 1 year membership to A Flash in the Pan.

9.  If you have won a membership on any of the blogs that are promoting this party or if you are chosen as a semi-finalist, you will be not be eligible to win at the # party.  However, you should most definitely plan to participate in the party because….surprises do happen every now again….

Being a good Parent

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

You know, I’m on the computer alot.  And one of the positives of that is that I actually get to see a lot of products that other people either may never know about or may never find in their store.  And, one such product is a set of Crock-Pot Tools.  See, we aren’t really good parents in this house and our kids eat a lot of restaurant and take-out.  So, when I found out I was getting this set of Crock-Pot Tools, I was totally stocked.

First let me tell you that I even made my husband go by the store and get the ingredients to cook something with the new utensils instead of having him swing through Taco Bell or something.  Wow! Yea, major deal for us.

And, before I show the photos and get you some information on where to find these beauties, let me remind you that you can win some too on #twittercruise on Thursday night at 8 PM Eastern Time. You have to RSVP so go the this link and do that right now.  Then jump on Twitter on Thursday night and party with us…virtually.

Now, more about these tools…but first let me tell you, my children’s eyes were big as saucers when they saw these.  The first thing out of my youngest child’s mouth was, “can we play with this in our kitchen” to which in unison my husband and I replied, “NO!”

So, check out the specs on this dudes…and pictures too…

After nearly four decades of having to “make do” with standard kitchen tools, slow cooking aficionados will rejoice in the introduction of Crock-Pot tools, which are precisely designed to perform the specialized techniques of slow cooking.  Introduced in select test markets last fall, and now officially unveiled at this year’s International Home & Housewares Show in March, value-priced Crock™ Tools also offer unique functionality beyond the slow-cooker, making them exceptionally welcome in a challenging economy that has consumers turning to the comfort of their own kitchens for dinner.

Designed by Robinson Home Products, the six Crock™ tools- two spoons, two “shovel turners,” a ladle and tongs- are designed to make slow cooking easier and more efficient, from transferring ingredients from skillet to slow cooker to gripping a whole roast.

The tools are currently sold at Target.com and Amazon.com and will soon be sold at Crock-Pot.com

And, honestly ya’ll, the prices are good, check this out…

Current tools in the Crock-Pot® Collection include:

Crock™ Spoon/ Crock™ Slotted Spoon (retail price $4.99)- The steep angled handle of the spoons makes it easier to maneuver inside the slow cooker. The Crock™ Spoon has a flat edged bowl and front corners that are particularly useful for scooping along the bottom and getting into the tight edges of the pot. The Crock™ Slotted Spoon’s wide bowl is helpful while stirring and the slots allow for the separation of meats and vegetables from juices before serving.

Crock™ Turner/ Crock™ Slotted Turner (retail price $4.99)- A completely unique tool, both “shovel turners” have a wide head and walled back and sides to ease the transfer of ingredients from a skillet to a slow cooker. The Crock™ Slotted Turner has slots to allow draining of liquid.

Crock™ Ladle (retail price $4.99)- The angled arm is ideal for maneuvering inside the slow cooker. The deep head allots a generous serving size with one lip slotted for straining liquid.

Crock™ Tongs (retail price $9.99)- Exceptionally generous-sized tong heads are ideal for gripping a whole roast with ease. The stainless steel arms have a pull tab locking mechanism. The head has a round profile to cradle roasts and teeth on the inside help grip meats. The tongs bottom edge can be used to pinch smaller items such as vegetables or potatoes.

All of the tools and tongs are made with nylon that is heat resistant to 400°F.

Easter Bunny is hopping our way

Sunday, April 5th, 2009

I’m kind of funny about some holidays.  One of them is Halloween but I won’t open that debate now.  The other is Easter.  What the heck does the Easter Bunny have to do with Easter?  Could someone share that tidbit of knowledge with me? (As if I couldn’t Google it myself).

Anyway, my kids have this enormous metal buckets that we painted white and then I painted eggs and grass on them.  They are freakin’ huge.  As a matter of fact, the first Easter that my kid’s experienced with their bucket….they fit in the bucket..yea the kid fit.  Anyway, because of that, I have my work cut out for me when I start gathering Easter Bunny stuff.  Yes, I know I just asked what the Easter Bunny had to do with anything but just so you know, we still celebrate it.

easter-egg

So, anyway, here’s what I do:

1.  Put an envelope in the bottom of the bucket and put a photo from each year in the envelope.  The next year, the kids love looking at the old photos.

2.  Anytime they win money in a prize egg, we write the date on it and put it in the envelope too.

Then, we tape the envelope to the bottom of the bucket until next year.  Then, I put plastic bags in the bottom of the bucket to take up some space.  Because otherwise it would take a fortune to outfit those big ol’ buckets.

The kids get one chocolate Easter Bunny and I would say a medium size one, nothing crazy.  Other than that, I buy books and crayons, coloring books and a game for the basket.  Normally the Easter Bunny leaves the baskets on family room in front of the fire place.  However, after our Christmas debacle where they opened all the gifts at 3 in the morning…we will probably have the Easter Bunny deliver to our bedroom this year.

So, now, tell me what you do?  Oh I forgot that we put plastic eggs in the basket too.  Ok, now, there’s a chance to win a $25 gift certificate at Kingdom First Mom so write your blog post and add it to the list, then you too qualify for the gift card!

Shidonni – What do you know about it?

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

290x178_2

We all want to know that our kids are exploring and learning like their peers.  And, we all want our children to be safe.  Making the decision to allow our children to be ‘online’ is a very serious decision.  But, when you find a site like Shidonni then you absolutely must find a way.

I don’t suggest giving your own computer over to your child to play on this site unless you never want to use it again yourself.  Well, at least that’s what happened to me.  We’ve had a computer in the wait for our children, waiting on the proper time for them to use it and when I found this site, I decided that absolutely the time was right.

Basically, you open up the page to a blank slate.  The children can then draw and create where their imagination is the limit.  And, with that, they can then learn to animate their creations and do their own thing without any two creations ever being the same.  It really is a great way to introduce your child to the world of online life.

Basically I call it a virtual world for your very own child.  And what kid doesn’t want to believe that his/her creation is the best one ever created and with Shidonni they have that opportunity.  But, like I said, I suggest you find them their own computer lest you have your computer taken over forever.

And, I’m kind of partial to you guys as readers and I don’t want to lose you all in the name of a child’s imagination….

“@jareason get your very own pro account at http://www2.shidonni.com/

3.  blog about this contest on your own blog and come back and leave a comment to the link where you’ve blogged about the contest

What do you know about Freepeats? UPDATES

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

REMEMBER, THE CONTEST ENDS TONIGHT, MARCH 22ND AT MIDNIGHT.  DON’T GET LEFT OUT

Freepeats is a site where parents can get gently-used baby, kid, maternity items like clothing, high chairs, bouncers, swings and toys for free from other parents who have finished with them.  Basically you can create a new offer by signing up for freepeats and then following the directions.

And, if you are ready to get rid of some of these products, you can go to the site and donate without feeling that tinge of guilt of just letting things go somewhere that you really don’t know much about.  There are many forums in many cities and once you registered you can check out all the places.  If you see something you want, you respond directly to the person offering the item via email and then at that point the two of you can make connections to work it out.

If you are looking for something in particular, you can create a “wanted” post and hopefully someone with those items will find you or someone can lead you to that product.

If you want to know more about how the products work, check out their FAQ’s here. You can also check out testimonials and the press pages.  Here’s a list of cities where Freepeats currently operates.

Here’s the latest press release regarding Freepeats:

FREEPEATS.ORG CONNECTS LOCAL PARENTS WITH FREE BABY, CHILDREN’S & MATERNITY ITEMS
Atlanta, Georgia – February 1, 2009 – Angie Wynne, founder of the popular frugal parenting website, Baby Cheapskate (babycheapskate.com), recently announced the expansion of Freepeats.org, an online forum which allows parents to pass on gently-used baby, kid, and maternity items they’ve finished with and pick up similar items for free from other nearby parents.
"Preparing for a baby’s arrival is expensive," says Wynne, "and so is raising one. Common estimates put the cost at $10,000 in the first year alone. And this is at a time when many families are trying to get by on one parent’s income. At the same time, many of the expensive baby items parents spend their money on get used only for a very short time. There’s still plenty of life left in them. If parents can find good-condition second-hand clothing, toys, and gear, they’ll shave hundreds of dollars or more off that $10,000 total. Besides that, we’ll keep usable items out of the landfills."
Freepeats groups are up and running in 45 major U.S. cities with dozens more openings planned for 2009. "I want parents all across the country to have access to the savings that Freepeats offers," Wynne says. "We’re opening the forums just as fast as we can." Freepeats members pay a nominal, one-time fee of $4.95 for lifetime membership.
Freepeats has now registered more than 17,000 members. Offerings have included bouncers, swings, cribs, infant formula, baby and toddler clothing, zoo tickets, diapers, strollers, high chairs, baby gyms, parenting books, toys, and more. The site has been featured at Discovery.com’s Planet Green website, Apartment Therapy.com, Nickelodeon’s Parents Connect website, Green Deals Daily, and in the pages of Readers Digest, Parenting magazine, and several local publications.
More information: Freepeats FAQ (http://freepeats.org/freepeats_faqs.htm).
About BabyCheapskate.com
Since 2005, BabyCheapskate.com has shown parents how to save money on baby necessities such as diapers, formula, apparel, and gear. The popular, weekly "Top Diaper and Formula Deals of the Week" post shows parents where to find the best local deals on diapers and formula. The site reaches more than 14,000 readers a day.

And, with that….I’m giving away 10 free lifetime memberships to any existing Freepeats group. (usually $4.95)

FP_125x125

Want to know how you  can get one of these free memberships…remember, there’s only 10 of them….

1.  Comment on this post by simply saying, “I want in” or something similar, no need for you to be obligated time wise to writing a short novel.

After you have done that, you can gain additional entries by tweeting about this opportunity, that tweet should read something like this:

@jareason I am interested in the lifetime membership to Freepeats, anyone else interested should go to www.momecentric.com & enter as well

after you do this, you must come back and leave another comment to the tweet even though you are @ me, I don’t want to miss anyone.

You can only enter once via a regular comment and once via a Twitter comment.  I am promoting this contest on other blogs so all the entries will be entered into Random.org and the first 10 winners will receive the memberships.

The contest begins at midnight, March 9 and runs through Midnight on March 22.  You must leave a valid email address so that I can contact you if you win.

Life Foundation – Something A Little Different

Monday, January 19th, 2009

What does Valentines mean to you?  A big ring?  A dozen roses?  Chocolate?  Wait, CHOCOLATE?  For me, yea, it basically has always meant chocolate.  I’ve never spent a Valentine’s day that was so romantic that I swore I’d never forget it.  Actually the only one I can remember was the one when my first born child was about 4 weeks old.  He was born on January 14th.  And, that very February 14th, I made the decision that my hard working husband deserved a decent Valentines.  So, I made arrangements to meet him at this Chinese place between our house and his job.

Well, the place was packed and our one month old son was far from even a little bit impressed with the lack of room and all the noise.  Lesson Learned.  Period.  Anyway, there’s some other folks who do better holidays than I do and who celebrate better than we do.  And, one such group of people are the people conducting an awareness campaign and are known as LIFE Foundation.

LIFE Foundation is holding a contest over the next few weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day.  Basically, the idea is that Valentine’s Day has become to be labeled as a “greeting card holiday,” but this year in particular offers the opportunity for people to get back to the holiday’s roots by rethinking what a genuine gift of love is.

So, LIFE’s goal is to make this year’s holiday a time to consider life insurance and make it a selfless and enduring gift giving occasion.  And, buying someone life insurance can be much like buying them chocolates.  Ok, maybe that’s a bit much but you know what I mean.  At least the life insurance would be around much longer than the box of chocolates.  Unless you are like me and you wear that box of chocolates around your waist for a few years.

LETTER

To encourage people to commit selfless acts of love this Valentine’s Day, LIFE is sponsoring an online contest during the weeks leading up to February 14. Anyone over age 18 is invited to nominate a close friend or family member who has exhibited selfless love for a chance to win a variety of prizes, including $2k towards the Cartier Love Collection!  Learn more at http://www.insureyourlove.org/.

The contest ends February 14th!   And, it’s worth noting that the act of selfless love doesn’t have to be insurance related but can be anything! I hope you enter as well!

Go check it out, ok?  Just do it for me.  Consider it your Valentine gift to me! mkay?
